What “timeless” actually means in practice.

Proportion first. Trends last.

It is proportion, mostly

A timeless room is rarely about the finish. It is about the relationship between the height of the ceiling, the size of the windows and the width of the room; the way a door is centered or a hallway ends in light. Get the proportions right and almost any honest material will look good in it for fifty years.

Materials that age rather than wear out

White oak, stone, plaster, brass, wool. These show their age and look better for it. Laminate, printed tile and lacquered finishes show their age and look worse. A timeless house is built from the first group.

Trends go in the things you can change

Paint, light fixtures, upholstery, a rug: change them when you like. The floor plan, the window sizes, the stair, the fireplace, the kitchen layout: these should be right for the house, not for the year. We keep the trend of the moment in the first list.

Restraint

A timeless house does not do everything. It does a few things fully. Fewer materials, fewer ceiling heights, fewer moments that shout. The quiet is what people feel when they say a house seems like it has always been there.
